Is Your Child's Car Seat Safe?
It's easy to overlook car seat safety between school runs and family outings, but taking a few moments to ensure your setup is correct can save lives. During Child Passenger Safety Week (September 21–27), take the time to verify that your seats are as safe as they can be.
Check the Installation
Shockingly, over half of all car seats are installed incorrectly. Your seat shouldn't move more than an inch when you pull at the base. Make sure you're using either the seat belt or the LATCH system, but not both, to secure it. Also, remember, car seats NEVER belong in the front seat of any vehicle.
Choose the Right Seat
Always choose a car seat that matches your child's age, height, and weight. The NHTSA's car seat finder is a handy tool for ensuring you have the right fit.
Strap Positioning Matters
Ensure harness straps are snug and lay flat, with no twists. The chest clip should always align with your child's armpits.
Know When to Transition
As tempting as it is to move to a larger seat, remember that with each stage, safety features decrease. Don't rush this transition; make sure your child truly meets the requirements for the next seat.
Moving a child out of a car seat and into the front passenger seat of a car should wait until the child is old enough, tall enough, and weighs enough. Check local standards, but DON'T rush it.
Get a Free Inspection
Schedule a free inspection with a local certified technician. Even small adjustments can significantly improve safety.
Small Details, Big Consequences
Even minor oversights can lead to severe consequences, but they are avoidable. Use this week to double-check your setup or book an inspection. As you prioritize safety, know that we're here to support you with any legal concerns this fall. Remember, prioritizing safety is always the right choice.
